Working for government. Tax deductions for eg stationary and courses that I have paid for myself?

By Marc Sevitz · Updated

I work for Gauteng Department of education. I am a Therapist and from time to time I buy my own stationary, therapy material and incentives for the children. I also do courses at my own expense. Where do I deduct the above mentioned expenses?

Do you work as a salaried employee for the government?

Yes, I earn a monthly salary. I work full time as a therapist for a government school and I receive an IRP5.

Unfortunately then you will not be able to deduct these expenses. While it is brilliant work you are doing and even more amazing that you are spending your own money on these extras you cannot deduct them for tax purposes. You should try and get the department or the school to refund you these amounts.
