Out-of-pocket dependent medical payments
By Evan Robinson · Updated
If I am a dependant on my husbands medical aid, but pay my own out-of-pocket (not covered by medical aid) expenses, can I claim this on my tax and where do I do that?
Yes you can, when you complete the tax return and the Medical section there will be a space for amounts not recovered from medical aid. Register for TaxTim and let us assist you in completing and submitting your tax return to SARS.
Great! The contributions get deducted off his salary for our medical aid monthly, that I guess he will fill in on his tax return.
If SARS asks for supporting documents for these out of pocket payments from me, what do they need? If it is a lot of accounts for the year, do they expect you to upload these accounts one by one, as I SARS eFile? And can a chiropractor account and medicine be claimed as out of pocket payments, as our medical aid does not cover these?

Yes they can be claimed, essentially any expenses either prescribed by a medical professional, or visits to a medical professional or operations or hospital visits. You would need to upload the statement or invoice and proof of payment for everything in your name.
