Objection allowed, how long before SARS refunds me?

By Marc Sevitz · Updated

I completed my 2014 tax return in July, but was then chosen for audit. After receiving a finalisation letter, I was chosen for a 2nd audit and requested to send more doc's. eFiling however was not "opened up" so the doc's could be uploaded, and an ITA34 was issued without the necessary doc's. I disputed the assessment, and received a notification that the objection was allowed on the 3rd of September. How long will it now take SARS to refund the money into my account?

You should be paid within the week, however I would contact SARS tomorrow on 0800 00 7277 and find out exactly.

Thanks for the reply, and the advice! I phoned SARS today, and the call centre agent confirmed that there are no outstanding returns or penalties or anything else that could cause the refund to be withheld, and it is now a waiting game. She did however say that she can not tell me exactly when the refund will be made, as there is no payment date stipulated yet, how does the refund system at SARS work, do you get in the back of the line and after a certain time you get assigned a refund date? Or do you know if SARS are experiencing problems with refunding money? Everyone I spoke to received their refunds within a day or two, maybe I'm just one of the "lucky" ones to be chosen for audit, chosen for 2nd audit, having to dispute an assessment, and after having the objection allowed by SARS having to wait for my refund indefinitely it seems :-) Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Please read our latest article about why your refund from SARS may be delayed. This is the latest information we have on the process during the 2014 filing season.
