Medical Expense claim
By Marc Sevitz · Updated
Hi. I am currently filling out my return. Regarding medical expenses not covered by my medical aid - do I have to have the receipts for these in order to claim. In many instances for prescriptions I have had filled out I have the invoices but not the receipts. The payments do reflect on my credit card statement though. Is this adequate or must I have a receipt ?
As long as you have the invoice or printout from the pharmacy, as well as proof of payment, you should be fine.
Does a credit card statement printout serve as adequate proof of payment ?
Yes, it does as long as you can link the transactions on the credit card statement clearly back to the pharmacy invoices. However, remember you only need to submit these documents to SARS if they request them.
