If one is not employed but gets donations for their upkeep, are they liable for tax?
If you are financially dependent on someone, the money you receive would not be seen as a donation and would not fall into the Income Tax Act.
Genuine "donations"/gifts between South African residents above R100,000 per annum are taxed at 20% in the hands of the donor (not recipient). Donations between spouses do not attract donations tax. Donations from an off-shore resident to a SA resident is also tax free.
