I haven't been paying tax since starting work (5 years). What are the implications?

By Marc Sevitz · Updated

I have been working since 2008 and earning enough to qualify for tax but I am not a registered taxpayer. Will I be liable to pay taxes for all those years I have been working till date, as I plan on registering for tax to avoid any more repercussions?

Usually your employer would have been paying your PAYE tax to SARS on your behalf, so in that case you won't be liable to pay the taxes for those years. You will however be liable for penalties and interest on all outstanding taxes to date for not submitting a tax return, so it is best to register ASAP and file your outstanding returns to ensure that the amounts do not grow.
