Foreign student earning salary and noticed 25% PAYU deduction??

By Marc Sevitz · Updated

I am a Dutch student doing research work twice a week with a local university, I am legally allowed to work and earn a salary with the university.
I however received my first payslip and notice PAYE deduction of 25%, will this money be lost or can I claim it back when I go back to Holland??

Hope to hear from you

Thx

When you go back to Holland you will still be able to submit a South African tax return. Depending on your total income, you may be able to claim most of the taxes paid back once you have submitted your return.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am only working for a two months this tax year, what paper work should I ask for from my employer (IRP5??) or do I have to complete papers from my local government when I return to the Netherlands??

Did the register you for a tax number? If so then you will receive an IRP5 at the end of May, they can email it to you. If you have a local bank account in SA then when you file your return in July 2014 you can receive your refund there. It can all be done online.
