Do I have to pay tax on a monthly salary below R20833.00

By Marc Sevitz · Updated

Anybody earning less than R250000.00 per annum don't have to submit tax returns according to media reports, that is equal to R20833.00 per month. Does that mean if your monthly salary is below R20833.00 no tax should be deducted monthly?

What this means is that if you only earn R250 000 from one source with no extra income or benefits - so only a salary showing as source code 3601 on your IRP5 with no medical or other deductions then SARS says you do not need to submit a return. You would still have to pay tax though as the tax threshold is R67 111 for the 2014 year.
