Do I have to give my bank statements when I register as a taxpayer?

SARS told me today that I must submit three months recent bank statements when I submit my registration forms - IT 77. Is this an error on the part of SARS official? Also advise me why my bank statements are needed.

You need a letter from the bank confirming your bank account number and the account holder. This must be stamped and signed by the bank and be an original.
