Depreciation Disallowed?

By Marc Sevitz · Updated

On my previous ITA34 SARS said that the amount refundable to me was R-6153.46 (there was a depreciation value of R2533.00 for a laptop that I use for work purposes). Now I have received a new ITA34 assessment stating that I owe SARS R633.25. The statement says DEPRECIATION DISALLOWED.

I sent them the original purchase tax receipt for the laptop, was I supposed to send them something else? What must I do now?

You would not owe SARS the R633.25, it just means that the refund amount is less by that amount so you would still receive about R5500. You need to demonstrate to SARS that you can use the laptop for work purposes. Does you employer allow this?

Thanks Tim,

My employer does allow the use of a laptop. Must I get a document from them stating that this is the case? How must I proceed with the matter?

If you get that document, you can dispute the assessment with SARS and provide a letter from yourself explaining how your arrived at that amount to deduct and the employment letter. LEt us know when you get the letter and we will assist.
