Compiling supporting documents for medical expenses not covered by medical aid scheme
By Marc Sevitz · Updated
On my Income tax certificate from Discovery there are two numbers given. Firstly one number for Contributions during the period and secondly a number for 'Claims not recovered from the Scheme'. I duly included these under the requisite sections when completing my tax return.
It is this second number I am interested in. Does this certificate suffice for the purposes of 'supporting documents' for medical expenses not paid by the scheme? Or are the invoices and proof of payments that make up this number required?
If it is the latter how does one go about compiling that seeing as all of the invoices with proof of payments attached were submitted to Discovery and therefore not in my possession?
In theory you are supposed to submit the proof of payment and the actual prescriptions, if you cannot get it back from the medical aid then submit the certificate and see if SARS requests more information.
On the ITA34 you received, is there an amount next to source code 4008?

I have submitted the certificate, I'll have to wait to see their response and whether they request further detail I suppose.
I can imagine that, if I have to, getting such information out of Discovery will be challenging as some of the claims will have been from 18 months ago.
On my IT34 the amount next to source code 4008 is 0.00

It won't make a difference then as you did not receive a deduction for the out of pocket expenses anyway. So nothing to worry about.
