Claiming for medical expenses paid out of personal savings account.

By Marc Sevitz · Updated

I did not have a fixed monthly income for the tax year ending Feb 2013. My medical expenses were covered from my personal savings account. I incurred medical expenses; can I still deduct the medical expenses paid from out of my private savings?

Yes you can, only medical expenses that were prescribed by a registered medical professional or incurred in hospital, so for example a script for medication or an x-ray or doctor's appointment. There is a special formula that SARS uses to calculate the deductible portion, but you must include these costs in your tax return nonetheless, as long as you have the documents to prove them (in case SARS asks for proof).
